High Performance Air Intake Systems for the MINI Cooper

A cold air intake is an aftermarket assembly of parts used to bring relatively cool air into a car's internal combustion engine. Most vehicles manufactured since the mid-1970s have thermostatic air intake systems that regulate the temperature of the air entering the engine's intake tract, providing warm air when the engine is cold and cold air when the engine is warm to maximize performance, efficiency and fuel economy. Aftermarket cold air intake systems are marketed with claims of increased engine efficiency and performance. The putative principle behind a cold air intake is that cooler air has a higher density, thus containing more oxygen per volume unit than warmer air.

The AEM Cold Air Intake system relocates the filter inside a sealed air box that is force fed cold air directly thru the hood scoop and into the custom AEM air channel that is mounted on the underside of the bonnet. This unique design seals the air intake system from using hot air generated in the engine compartment. Cooler air carries more oxygen, which translates into a more intense explosion in the combustion chamber to create more horsepower and torque. But that's only part of the power equation. Tuning the inlet pipe in length and diameter to match the engine's resonance helps move more air to the cylinders (think of your engine as a big air pump), and this tuning allows us to deliver large power gains.

aFe is proud to introduce the Stage-2 air intake system for the 2011-2013 MINI Cooper S with the L4-1.6L turbo engine. This Stage-2 intake system produces up to 18HP and 20lbs. x ft. of torque over stock, while outflowing the factory intake by 49%. Included in this system is a large 360 degree high flow PRO DRY S air filter for maximum flow, filtration and convenience. The PRO DRY S air filter requires no oils and cleans with simple soap and water. This intake system uses a 16 gauge steel heat shield that is positioned under the factory hood scoop to supply the air filter with cool, dense air for maximum performance.

360 Degree Air Filter:

The MINI Cooper S engine utilizes a turbocharger to pressurize the intake tract to force feed the engine air in order to produce power. As such, NM Engineering has identified a weak point that impairs the efficiency of this system. The NM Engineering Hi-Flow Charge Pipe replaces the factory necked-down hose between the intercooler and throttle body (cold-side) with a new pipe and silicone couplers that will not expand under boost. The system eliminates the OEM sound chamber which results in increased turbo response as well as mid-range and top-end power.

NM Engineering Hot Air Discharge Pipe | Boost Tube for the MINI Cooper S | MINI JCW


The MINI Cooper S engine utilizes a turbocharger to pressurize the intake tract to force feed the engine air to produce power. NM Engineering introduces the complete intake system for the turbocharged model MINI Cooper S. Unlike some competitors, the NM intake features an integrated larger turbo inlet tube. The stainless steel brackets, hardware and silicone couplings were all designed, engineered and manufactured to fit and perform.

The Open air box system gives you an abundance of unrestricted 360 degrees of air source compared to the OEM sealed air box with flat filter and tube fed air source. During R&D, we installed temperature probes around the engine compartment and the gauge showed the inside temperature matched the ambient after the vehicle sped past 20 mph, logging the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor also showed that open-air-box intake generated higher volume (gr/sec) of air going through the sensor. So when we had to choose between cooler air at all speed with a limited air source vs. cooler air at 20~ mph with an unlimited air source, the choice was pretty obvious.

The blue and black tubes in the kit feature CNC mandrel bent aluminum pipe finished with durable textured powder coat. The other option is Carbon Fiber tubing which features 100% carbon fiber composite material shown to be lightweight and has a great appearance. Utilizing a vacuum bag manufacturing method produces a part that has consistent wall thickness while avoiding excessive resin build-up.

NM Engineering Intake System for the MINI Cooper S | N14 and N18 Engine

MINI did a great job on the 2011+ model MCS in improving the turbo intake tube by replacing the soft rubber tubing with a full size and rigid ABS plastic one, similar to NM's aluminum/silicone version for the 2007~2010 MCS & JCW vehicles. So NM decided to leave the inlet tube out and this allows the price of the kit to be more economical. This kit will fit the 2011+ N18 engine as well as serving as an inexpensive solution for the 2007+ N14 engines.

NM Engineering Intake System - Black Hardpipe for the MINI Cooper S | N18 Engine

The NM Engineering intake system for the turbocharged MINI Cooper S and JCW with the N18 motor. The stainless steel brackets, hardware and silicone couplings were all designed, engineered and manufactured to fit and perform. The 'Open-Air-Box' system gives you an abundance of unrestricted 360° air source compared to the OEM's sealed air box with flat filter and tube fed air source. During R&D, NM installed temperature probes around the engine compartment and the gauge showed the inside temperature matched the ambient after vehicle sped past 20 mph. Logging the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor also showed that open-air-box intake generated a higher volume (gr/sec) of air going through the sensor. So when NM had to choose between (a) cooler air at all speeds with limited air source, vs. (b) cooler air at 20~ mph. with unlimited air source, the choice was pretty obvious. The blue or black hardpipe kits feature CNC mandrel bent aluminum pipe and finished with durable textured powder coat. Our other option is the Carbon Fiber hardpipe which features 100% carbon fiber composite material to be lightweight and for great appearance. Utilizing vacuum bag manufacturing methods produces a part that has consistent wall thickness, while avoiding excessive resin build-up. Also included is a pre-oiled and cleanable NM filter. C.A.R.B. It is a completely bolt-on Open Air Box system which gives you the most abundant and unrestricted 360 degrees of air source compared to the OEM sealed air box.
